Have A Healthy International Women’s Day! Love And Forgive Yourself

by Samantha Bacchus McLeod

Feminism is a religion. Fighting racism and injustices are our passions…should we be asked to choose our passions over our religion, we will always choose to defend and applaud women first.

A woman’s life is strife with pain gained from lessons learnt against our will. We yearn for those unlearned days before innocence, our warm blanket, was ripped away, stolen, to leave us shivering in the cold and cruel air. Yet, we are emboldened, more so than ever we were, we have each other now, the #metoo movement brought us together.

We started coming together in unity, but first we had to once again be embroiled in our individual past, we had to face our fears, our shames inflicted upon us, our guilt for not speaking out. We had to forgive others or let them stay in the past where they belong, we had to understand why we know the things we know now and accept we only knew what we knew then.

International Women’s Day is not just a celebration, it is a global recognition of all of us wishing all of us to heal well, to love ourselves, and to celebrate each other. As we grow stronger in numbers, as we learn to embrace each other, and to fight for women across the globe…remember to forgive yourself too, love yourself too and keep the movement alive.

International Women’s Day means I get to celebrate my mother, her indomitable force in the face of her life’s hardships and life lessons, her unbreakable resistance to the most unimaginable experiences, her unbrokenness. I love that about her, life took massive cracks at her but she would not break, not completely. She is kind and strong and full of love.

TODAY WE:

Celebrate Women in Tech, without them our work life would be drudgery.

Celebrate Women in Film, they are reshaping the way of movies, actors are finally being seen clothed in their talents, their emotions, their intelligence, these women portray all of us so the world can see us as we are.

Celebrate Women and Food, the fisherwomen, the farmers, the producers and chefs and restauranteurs, you keep us inspired to keep telling your stories.

Celebrate Women in Medicine, doctors and nurses, researchers, all of you. Thank you for holding us together through this pandemic. Dr. Bonnie Henry especially.

Celebrate Women in Politics, you show us we have arrived in the present and surpassed the future and we ain’t going nowhere but onwards and upwards.

Celebrate Women of the Pen, we are writers, authors, bloggers, storytellers, documentarians. We are here to ensure we will never be written out of history again.

Celebrate all women, our sisters and our friends…
…I celebrate my sibling Tess, and my daughter Tash, they have helped shape me.

Feminism is a religion. Fighting racism and injustices are our passions…should we be asked to choose our passions over our religion, we will always choose to defend and applaud women first.

On this Women’s Day we pledge as we pledge every year to claim, no, RECLAIM the strength of womanhood. We make a promise to ourselves…when there is nothing left to give…forgive. And be free.

Today as we go about our day, we will make eye contact with every sister we see. We will smile with each other, smile like the whole world is watching us…because when a woman smiles with a sister-stranger in passing the whole world feels right

I see you.
